SFL Muslim Federation holds Bi-Annual General Body Meeting

SFL Muslim Federation held its Bi-Annual General Body Meeting on Saturday, Nov 11. 2023 at Nurul Islam. Muslim leadership from across the tri-county region attended the meeting. During the meeting, the Federation members unanimously passed a resolution in support of justice in Palestine.

The leaders also discussed key projects undertaken by the Federation for the benefit of the community including Outreach and Advocacy for Palestine, Masjid Safety and Security Grants, Eid Holiday in SFL, Muslim Mental Health and the upcoming regional SoFlo Muslims Conference.

Executive Committee Elections

The General Body meeting also welcomed their newly elected members following the Federation’s Executive Committee Elections. The open positions and nominations for each included:

Position/ Nominee

1. President of the Executive Committee – Samir Kakli, Yunus Ismail
2. Secretary of the Executive Committee – Annie Hayat
3. Miami-Dade Representative – Patricia Salahuddin
4. Outreach Chair – Hesham Ali, Taha Qureshi
5. Treasurer – Mim Khan

Results – Elected members

Two of the nominees withdrew their nomination before election, namely, Yunus Ismail and Taha Qureshi. The final results are as follows:

1. President of the Executive Committee – Samir Kakli
2. Secretary of the Executive Committee – Annie Hayat (unopposed)
3. Miami-Dade Representative – Patricia Salahuddin (unopposed)
4. Outreach Chair – Hesham Ali
5. Treasurer – Mim Khan (unopposed)

Raising the Bar stories of Federation Members

The meeting also provided an opportunity for our members to talk about some of their successful projects that other members could replicate at their own centers. Sr. Samira Rahaman talked about Sisters’ Game Night initiative at Masjid Al-Ihsaan that has seen an increase in sisters participation at Masjid events. Br Omar Uddin from ICBR talked about the convert care program at the center has been well-received by the reverts as well as individuals interested in learning more about Islam. He urged the masajid leadership to have such a program at their centers in order to welcome and integrate reverts so that they don’t feel isolated or discouraged. Mufti Sultan Mohiuddin shared his insights on the Real Talk for Young Adults program at IFSF that is very famous among the young adults of the community. He stressed the need for such programs to encourage inclusivity and encouraging Muslims brothers and sisters starting a new phase of their professional or personal life feel connected to the faith.
