Broward County Public Schools Proclaim Eid Day-off

Eid ul-Fitr officially a School Day-Off!

Alhamdulillah, (Thanks to God), the Broward County Public School board passed the motion in a 7-1 vote to approve the 2022-2023 school calendar, which includes April 21st, 2023 (Eid ul-Fitr) as an official school day off. It is moments like this in which we thank Allah (swt) for His tremendous Blessings and Mercy in bringing this honor to our community.

This is the end result of a tireless effort from our South Florida Community; both organizations and individuals, Muslims and non-Muslims. First and foremost, we applaud the sustained efforts from Sr Naima Khan and the Broward County MSA council in doing so much groundwork to build the relationships and momentum to get us to a position where this was even on the table for discussion.

Also must recognize the wonderful teamwork from the many other organizations involved – Emgage FL, Friends of Humanity, Islamic Foundation of South Florida, coordinated by South Florida Muslim Federation. This would not have been possible without the cooperation and support from our friends and allies, including and especially the Broward County School Board.

“Alhamdulillah! This is certainly a historic day in Broward County public schools!
It has been a long and tedious journey but with persistence perseverance and community support we were able to accomplish this momentous feat despite all its challenges!
Broward county public school board has embraced our diverse culture and promoted equity and inclusion for all students. We have finally engaged in courageous conversations, broken barriers and built bridges!”

– Sr Naima Khan, Broward County Council of MSAs

“Broward County has always been a leader in diversity and inclusion in Florida, and we are thankful to the Broward County Public School Board and the district staff chose to continue to be a champion in that space with their vote today. Many thanks to the amazing supporters and advocates who worked tirelessly for this cause, and a big thank you to the school board members, teachers, and district staff for recognizing and hearing our community’s feedback.”

– Corey Shearer, Emgage Florida Outreach Lead

“The South Florida Muslim community has not only grown, but become integrated with the greater society. We are very much part of the fabric of Broward County, and today the Broward County School Board has shown excellent leadership in making the important step in formally recognizing that. We thank the school board for demonstrating commitment to inclusion, equity, and diversity to recognize Eid Holiday as a day off in 2023.”

– Samir Kakli, President, South Florida Muslim Federation
