Between the black and white

Between the black and white

There is so much bad happening in the world that with every cruel, vile and deceiving act; with every new bad, we console ourselves with a thought that this was probably the worst thing and nothing worse could ever happen again. And yet another more gruesome reality awaits us as we turn to a new page.

Imam Jamil Al Amin’s situation is that new bad that I found out only recently through a series of advocacy virtual sessions conducted by Maha Elkolali, Esq., member of SFMF executive committee and coordinator of its outreach committee.

Formerly known as H Rap Brown, Imam Jamil has been languishing in prison for 20 years for a crime he never committed. He has been wrongfully accused of a murder that was committed by a man, James Santos aka Otis Jackson, who has confessed to it. The details of his confession are proof enough to acquit Imam Jamil. Yet the criminal justice system refuses to acknowledge let alone admit the confession.

There is so much bad happening in the world that it seems no good can ever happen. And yet with every turn of a page, there is a good taking place. In Imam Jamil’s case, the unrelenting advocacy efforts for his release are a proof that with every bad there is a good in the world. These efforts, though not as successful as hoped for, are a testament that truth will not be silenced. It will make its own path, no matter how hard.

And so between the bad and the good; the black and the white, there is a light which shines through and brightens the darkest of places.
